It’s a gorgeous time of year in London. The city’s streets are festooned with lights, creating a magical glow after dark. However, London’s winters may be terrible if you aren’t prepared for them. To properly take advantage of your time in London in winter, you’ll need to prepare appropriately for the weather.
Whether you’re going to enjoy a hot cup of mulled wine by a roaring fire in a London pub or to catch a DJ on Carnaby Street, braving the cold and rain is worth it. The key to staying warm in the fall and winter is to layer up. You need to know that even if the temperature outside drops into the arctic, public transportation, bars, stores, and theaters will all be cozy and comfortable.
Winter Coats:
Putting on three sweaters and bracing yourself is no longer sufficient. For emergencies, you’ll need a bulky jacket that you can throw on over your outfit and be ready to go. Your luggage should consist of items that are easy to put on and take off as you move from the subway to a pub to a street to a hostel. There is nothing worse than having to fight with anything that is too snug or requires more than four seconds to put on. Warmth is more important than elegance in this case. That cashmere coat may be beautiful, but if you’re not going to be able to keep yourself warm in the weather, leave it at home.
To avoid looking such as the Pillsbury Doughboy when out and about, one of the most critical considerations is to dress appropriately. It is vital to layer, but overdoing it may cause you to overheat and become uncomfortable. Eww. Make sure your coat can keep you out of the wind, so you don’t have to wear an additional layer to remain warm. I know this may sound like an unusual question, but it’s important to be able to wear shirts and another sweater below it. A garment that ends at the hips will leave you with chilly thighs. Choose a hemline that hits slightly above the knee to avoid seeming clumsy.

Boots:
Even though it may seem self-evident, the appropriate shoe may make or break your feet’ comfort level. You’ll need to make sure that your shoes are both waterproof and comfortable since exploring London’s roads on a winter evening with the beautiful lights around you is among my favorite things to do in the city. There are several places in London where you’ll wish you had switched your brogues for just some sturdy boots, including Regent Street or Trafalgar Square, where people are thick. Take my word for it. Socks are an absolute must! To keep your feet warm, you’ll have to sprint to Primark if you don’t carry two pairs of shoes every day.
Accessories:
These aren’t mentioned only for the sake of full disclosure. If you want to enjoy your London winter vacation to the fullest, you’ll need to bring the following goods with you:
- Gloves. You want to take your fingers warm in the chilly weather. Like the coat, you need to keep the breeze out, and knitwear simply isn’t going to cut it.
- A beanie and a scarf are all that are needed. Wind and rain may get in via even the tiniest cracks and crevices. Invest in a warm beanie and scarf set to keep the cold out. To make Londoner’s grin when they see you, look for one with rainbow colors.
- Sunglasses. You’ve got my attention! Those of you who were not raised in frigid areas may be perplexed by this one. With continual cloud cover and moist pavement reflecting the light source, London is a bright place to be in the summer. If you want to view that hottie you’ve been stalking across Hyde Park ever since you noticed their rainbow bean and keep your eyes protected, you’ll need those glasses.
